about

In "Silence", I was trying to convey a sense of longing using primarily major tonalities (which usually sound happy). Throughout much of this record, the challenge was how to convey complex, subtle, and not necessarily positive emotions through traditionally happier constructs. It's much easier to make sad sounding melodies have a sense of longing and tension, but I was going for a feeling a bit more complicated than sadness.

Anyone who has gone through a season of pain knows that moment when their suffering seems to become a friend: when pain frees you from worry or caution and actually makes you feel invincible. I know in such seasons, there is a moment where I felt like because I was already hurt, nothing more could hurt me. It's that moment, when things shift, that I wanted to explore.

It's not a resolution of my suffering (something I tried to capture through weaving in and out of being in time or slightly off), but a moment when surviving seems possible again and just enough wind lifts our sails to keep us moving. I wanted to try to capture that moment of wounded boldness and longing in this song.
